NEWS

We are happy to publicise events at your Uechi-Ryu Karate dojo as well as ours - just let us have the details and we will add them to this site.

Oct 2009 - Okinawan Uechi-Ryu Masters Visit

The European Uechi-Ryu Kenyukai has invited Master Kiyohide Shinjo to send an instructor to run a special training weekend in Paris. Master Shinjo has very kindly asked two of his top instructors to come and represent him. Sensei Shota Tsukayama and Sensei Satoshi Kinjo will be coming over specifically to run a long weekends training on 23, 24, 25 October 2009. All Uechi-Ryu students, regardless of association or grade are warmly invited to go and join in.

Whether you are a white belt or a black belt you are strongly recommended to make the effort and go to Paris to join in. Thanks to the awful state of the economy not many of us can afford to go to Okinawa, so do the next best thing and go to see them when they make the effort to come and see you!! Most UK based Uechi-Ryu students will not have the opportunity to train with an Okinawan Master for many years, if at all, so do not miss this rare opportunity. Despite what you may think, there is plenty of affordable acommodation in Paris and you can take advantage of very cheap flights or even just drive over there!

Master Kiyohide Shinjo is known around the world for his incredible Uechi-Ryu expertise. Make no mistake, his 'students' will be just as impressive so BE THERE!! No matter how good, or bad, you think you are, this is an excellent opportunity to train with two of the top Uechi-Ryu Instructors.

Please feel free to contact me (Nigel Coole) for further details or go direct to the Uechi-Ryu Kenyukai Europe website for details. We intend to go and may have space for others who are going.

Uechi-Ryu Association (GB) Dan Grading - Oxford November 2008

I was invited to visit the Uechi-Ryu Association (GB) Dan Grading (Brown belt to Black belt) that was held in Oxford on 8 Nov 08 and to join in the training prior to the actual grading itself. I want to pass on my congratulations to those students that passed their grading; to those that were not successful I hope the experience has encouraged you to work even harder at your Uechi-Ryu Karate and to achieving the coverted Uechi-Ryu Karate Black Belt in the not too distant future.

Whilst not a member of the GB Association myself (I am a member of the Uechi-Ryu Kenyukai, a student of Master Takemi Takayasu, and through him Master Kiyohide Shinjo) I was made most welcome by everyone present which just proves that Uechi-Ryu Karate is still one big family no matter which association you are part of. It was a genuine pleasure to meet people that I had not met for 25 years - hi Terry and Mick! - and to meet everyone else that I had not met before.

After the formal group training was over Kuda Adams, Steve McNally (jnr), Alan Holmes, Duncan Harper and myself spent a very useful couple of hours training together prior to the grading. Coming from 4 different clubs it was really good to see that there were so few differences and that even then they were mainly a matter of personal style. Thanks Guys and I hope to be able to train with you again in the not too distant future.

23 August 2007

Visit from Senior London Instructor

We were delighted to meet Kuda Adams (4th Dan) on 23 August 2007 when he came down from London to train with us. It was really good to meet a Uechi-Ryu Karate practitioner from one of the UK's oldest clubs. Kuda, one of Terry Daly's (6th Dan) senior students, joined in with the regular evening training. Kuda will shortly be opening a new dojo in Wandsworth, London so if you live nearby please feel free to drop him a line - contact details on our UK Clubs page. We hope to reciprocate and to visit London later in the year to train with Terry, Kuda and the other London Uechi-Ryu practitioners.

Kanei Uechi Memorial Seminar - 10/11 March 2007

We are planning a Uechi-Ryu Training Seminar on 10 & 11th March 2007 to mark the anniversary of the death of Master Kanei Uechi. It is hoped that there will be enough support from other dojos to make this an annual event being held on the closest possible weekend to the death of Master Kanei Uechi to mark the incredible contribution he made to the furtherance of Uechi-Ryu Karate and friendship around the world.

The seminar weekend will be open to all Uechi-Ryu practioners from beginner to senior grades and regardless of which association you are part off. The Seminar will cover the full range of study from Sanchin to sparring. The plan is for a 3hour session on Saturday 10th March starting at 2pm followed by a 2 hour session on Sunday 11th at 12 midday.

There will be a minimal charge to cover the costs etc but it will be kept to an absolute minimum to encourage as many people as possible to attend. If there is sufficient interest I will also plan a group meal/social event for the Saturday evening.

If you are a Dan grade and are prepared to lead a session or have a special area of interest, please contact me asp as I am putting together a training programme and am looking for a variety of instructors to lead on the various different sessions.

This is open to all grades - please drop me an email to let me know you are at interested and I will email you directly with further details, programme etc as soon as they are confirmed.

Martial Arts Illustrated

Major Uechi-Ryu article in key UK Martial Arts Magazine

Following submission of an article by Nigel Coole to one of the UK's foremost martial arts magazine, Martial Arts Illustrated, we are pleased to say it was published almost entirely as submitted along with a number of photographs to accompany the article.

The article was about the Uechi-Ryu Kenyukai Summer Camp in France 2006. Readers will notice that the only major howler is the misspelling of the word 'Kenyukai' in the articles title. For readers that can purchase it it is in the Jan 2007 edition.

November 2006

Our first visitor drops in to train with us

We would all like to thank Adam Wray 3rd Dan for dropping in to train with us on Thursday 10th November 2006. Adam, who trains regularly in Seven Oaks, Kent, just happened to be coming down our way on business so having seen our website in the past he brought his kit along with him. He gave us a call just a few hours before training so see if he could join in. Naturally we were delighted to have him with us. During his visit Adam joined in the class and assisted with the evenings instruction. His visit was particularly appreciated as it meant he would not get home until well after midnight.

We offer an equally warm welcome to all Uechi-Ryu instructors and students who would like to visit us.

June 2006

THE NEW UECHI-RYU KARATE CLUB HAS NOW OPENED IN HEDGE END, SOUTHAMPTON

A big thank you to the all the new students who turned up on Monday 26th June 2006 for the opening night of the new Uechi-Ryu Karate Club in Hedge End. I hope it wasn't too confusing for you all and that you all enjoyed your first session. I also hope that this is just the start of a long and very satisfying journey for you all.

For those readers who have only just found this site and who have thought about learning karate but have dreaded the thought of being the only beginner in the class then now is the ideal time to that step as the whole class are starting together.

Classes are for both men and women aged 16 and over. Beginners and students who have previously studied other styles are equally welcome.

Don't worry you do not have to be Bruce Lee or super fit as classes will always allow beginners to develop their fitness and ability. Karate is not only a great way to get fit but it will also help you to develop the presence of mind that is often needed to cope with the pressures and potential conflicts of life.
